A Word About Words

$

The in-exactitude of a message is equal to the amount of time taken to write the message multiplied by the expediency of the medium of communication

Words, Words, Words they're everywhere and everything when it comes to your online marketing!  But, when you get down to the nitty gritty, the down and dirty, you may have realized that the content you so easily spit out in rapid order over IM or a chat window in Facebook seem to be a little less valuable than if you had taken the extra time to put those ideas and expressions of feeling and thought into a blog post, or even a static page of content on your website.
The average human being hand-writes at 31 words per minute for memorized text and 22 words per minute while copying"  -Brown, C. M. (1988).

So much more so the hand written letter, if the average person copies text at 22 words per minute, you can guarantee that most creative writing is more full of creative pauses and thought since you can't just "backspace" over your error.

You should also consider that even the most well crafted sentence, if said in person, could carry so much more weight as you emphasize different syllables, stress the different nouns and elongate the sounds of a word to make it fit your exact feeling.  Be sure that you're using all forms of for your business, from expedient chat messages, Facebook posts, emails and face to face conversations be sure to convey yourself and your business's principles in your dealings with your clients honestly and openly you never know exactly what may turn someone from a client, to a fan and advocate who will help your business much more than a single financial contribution to your bottom line.

Using Search Intent to Build Content

"Query intent can be classified, according to Google, as Action (“Do”), Information (“Know”) or Navigation (“Go”)"

Well, it turns out that Google's "quality raters" checklist got leaked, and while it wasn't a bombshell of secret information, it does provide some useful insights (thanks for the 16 points of insight SEOMOZ!)

Do you have information on your website for all 3 different types of intent on your website? Here's some ideas to be sure you actually cover with content on your website, this example is for a real estate site, but just think it out for your own industry.

Action: Search for a home, Get CMA, List a home, get a buyers agent, get a sellers agent
Information: Learn about community, learn about home buying/selling
Navigation: Your Office/business location, contact info

Scribe: More Traffic in Less Time

Lessons from messing up your Google Places Settings

I took up a job to find out why these paralegals in Riverside were suddenly no longer ranking for local oriented searches. After a little poking around, I found that they had changed their Google Places setting:

They had changed this setting to be "Yes, this business serves customers at their locations", instead of serving at their location. If you have a brick and mortar, your site/business and citations are treated differently! If you DO have a location, then make sure you play that card for all it's worth. Otherwise, you need to make sure you've got enough area specific keyword references backing up your listed service areas if you don't have a brick and mortar address.

Notes on adding Photos to Google Places

As a business owner:

  • Add photos of a a logo with contact information

  • Source: It's important to understand that the interaction of a Google Places with photos is different depending on the source of the photo. When you upload your photos logged in to your Places account, then it will gain a stamp
    "From the owner" .

  • Add photos of your location from the street, so those seeing your brick and mortar will be better able to pick out your business, in case they have to park elsewhere if parking space isn't available.

  • Add photos of your products and service being fulfilled

Photos Should Match Your Content

When you are adding photos to your blog posts, and your web pages you want to make sure to use images that make sense for what you're writing and not just jamming in stock photo content. If you take time to consider your images, then it makes it much easier to write meta information that's relevant to the topic which strengthens the overall relevance and usability of the page.

  • Do you use Excel to try and keep track of websites you've gained links from in the past? Quoth the Raven, "Nevermore."

  • Do you have to log separately into Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter to see their statistics and measure your engagement with clients?

  • Do you struggle with finding a trustworthy source of cost effective content writing for your website copy? Then the bird said, "Nevermore.

Listen to me, I've been a believer in Raven SEO Tools since they gave me a free T-shirt 3 years ago and I logged into their platform for the first time. It gave me access to track keywords, build a profile for each client where I could log links I'd built and gave me analytical tools to improve those client's websites. They have improved since then, with UI updates, and new features and capabilities that have changed with the boom of social media.

So, trust me when I say they are awesome. They've got a 30day trial thingy. You won't be dissapointed.

Pagerank Toolbar Is A Scam: SES New York Link Building Basics panel

The PageRank toolbar is a Scam?

David Degrelle, was the 3rd panelist for the Link Building Basics panel at Search Engine Strategies, New York March 2008. I was more interested in his presentation than the previous two panelists, he put forth a very interesting theory.

Remember Bonzi Buddy? It claimed to "be your online freind!" When it really just tracked your online activity. Remember Gator? This spyware offered to remember your usernames and passwords for you, when it would really just tracked your online activity. Remember the PageRank Toolbar? It offered to show you the "PageRank" of a page...

This past December I made a mistake. I could blame the fact that my wife was very pregnant. I could blame the fact that I hadn't blogged for over 8 months since I started working for Raven Tools. The truth is that I let my domain footinmouthdisease.net expire and it was one of the biggest mistakes I've made recently.

I had forgotten that although I hadn't blogged recently, I had blogged a lot. Over 200 posts of varying types, sizes and level of interest as I developed as an SEO and as a person. Yes, of course those posts still existed on wordpress, at a temporary ,wordpress.com address but knowing that all of those hard earned backlinks were now pointing to a health blogger who does write real, lengthy content, but it's about mouth ulcers and the importance of mouthwash. The new site owner also ignored my many emails and contact form requests to see if I could buy the domain back. Alas, he is well aware of my backlink profile strength that I built up over the years.

So, this is my new blog URL. I hope to reclaim at least some of those links (and blog about the process) so I hope you'll be a regular reader as I write about SEO, post up my recent GIF creations and post on random nerdy stuff that catches my eye.

Howdy! I haven't had an active blog for a while but that doesn't mean I haven't been writing and creating good quality content elsewhere like Raven Tools. Here's a round-up of my recent articles, and guest posts around the wild internet.

SEO metrics that matter: A Raven Tools Hangout recap

Raven Tools Hangout on SEO Metrics

While I admit that for this post I didn't actually have ti write very much for this one but it is a recap of the Hangout on Air I hosted for Raven Tools on the topic of SEO Metrics with AJ Kohn, David Harry, Steven Shattuck, Jon Henshaw, Annie Cushing, and Demian Farnworth which was very enjoyable, informative and worth giving watching.

28 SEO Metrics you can Report and Sell to Clients

Make the connection between your SEO work and a business meeting its goals

I'm very proud to have co-authored this white-paper with the very talented Arienne Holland.
"As an SEO, you know that when it comes to reporting results, every client wants something different. Some clients want every detail; some just want highlights. But all clients want to meet business goals. If a client understands the connection of your SEO work to their business goals, they’re far more likely to pay you — and keep paying you."

Choosing the Right SEO Metrics

"The reality of search engine optimization – or any marketing, for that matter – is that it won’t fix a fundamentally broken business or pave over bad business practices."

Ultimate list of Google Authorship Resources

"Today you can see the impact on results pages in the form of author photos, their +1 count, and a link to additional articles by that author in SERPs. Author Rank has the potential to become a ranking factor as powerful as Page Rank."

An OPEN approach to social media based outreach

• Observe how people use that social media network
• Participate in that network in a natural way
• Engage people on that network with you own unique contributions
• Network until you’ve built a list of contacts who have become so familiar with you and your strengths that it makes sense for them to include resources from you to share with their own audience.

Ultimate List of Marketing Twitter Chats

The Ultimate list of Marketing Twitter Chats
"Twitter is a hub for influential people – including authorities on SEO, social media and online marketing. The difficult part is separating the valuable messages from self-promotion. One way to cut through the noise and get to the good stuff is to find and participate in Twitter chats that are relevant to your industry."

Technical SEO: The ABCs of 404 errors

"After 15 hours on the road to Nashville from California to fill the position of Product Marketing Manager for Raven, it was time to find our hotel for the night, but things weren’t looking quite right. My wife had copied and pasted the address into her navigation, and turn by turn it quickly became apparent that we were in a less than savory neighborhood – and nowhere near a hotel.
We’d just received the real world equivalent of a 404 error, caused by a small typo when they left the “North” off the street name. "

Ultimate List of Conversion Optimization Tools

Sunrize Donuts & seafoods
Is your website as appealing visitors as this restaurant? Here's the tools you need to find out.
"The goal of any website is to get a user to take action. Whether you’re trying to get them to subscribe to your blog, buy a product, fill out a contact form or anything else, it’s all about improving your conversion rate."

Community: The best local SEO strategy you're not using

You don’t have to wear a kilt, but events can be a big link-building advantage
"Telling your story is important, but telling the stories of your community is the best local SEO strategy you’re not using. When you’re establishing your website, determine what makes you unique within your industry as well as what’s special about your community that you can connect with."

New G+ Pages "Dashboard"

I was just trying out the new "Dashboard" experience for G+ pages (These screencaptures are from The Man Couch  project). Note: This one doesn't have a connected, verified G+ local listing connected which I think seemingly is required to get an additional reporting dashboard according to Barry Wise of Knowem who said:

"I have a local listing and when you're approved you'll see Insights (graph of visitors), stats on people requesting driving directions, and a list of top search queries

Same data in Insights, and I can still access the Places dashboard.  The big change is the driving directions, mine says 0 right now because it's new, but there's a map marker and grayed out text which says "Requests" and "Data will appear when more people search for your business", so I assume it will list everyone who requested driving directions.

Other than that the search queries seem to be the same as those listed in Webmaster tools (except it's for a listing, not a website), and the Insights on visitors are a bit different.  You can view visitor stats by Local Search Views, Post Views and Profile Views."

If you have more screen captures of a G+ dashboard with for a verified local listing, please message me and I'll update the post with the images and give you appropriate link attribution.

Best Times to Post to G+ - According to Google

The Best Time To Post To G+

I got an email today from Google with some tips on getting more out of my G+ page. The most interesting tidbit actually was related to the time you post to Gplus. So when is the best time to post based on Google's suggestion?
The best time to post is 10AM to 2PM on weekdays.

Scheduling Reminders to Post with Google Calendars

I was super excited for just a moment, because I thought Google had added a scheduled G+ post option, but alas it doesn't yet exist. However Google did have an alternate suggestion that might help you remember to post, if that's an issue for you because for me it's the opposite.
Basically you can set a recurring reminder in Google calendar to make a G+ post. Pretty basic, but I think it could help if you don't have G+ as an addiction...like me.

Youtube Faceblur and Slowmotion Features

So the new Youtube Editor has some fun little features. First is a Face blurring program. It gives you the option to delete the original video, but it will always apply the effects of the edit to a COPY of the video and not the original. They also have a slow motion feature that lets you do 50%, 25% and 12.5% speed, and again creates a copy of the original.
